Model United Nations is a big part of AST’s history and campus life. In 2001, AST started Taiwan Model United Nations (TAIMUN), the first MUN conference on the island. For two days, all students from grades eight to twelve transform the campus into a center for diplomacy and problem-solving on the world’s pressing issues. Students from schools around Taiwan and a few from Asia come and join us for this simulation of the United Nations, playing the role of country representatives. Model UN is an excellent program in which students develop a variety of valuable skills, such as public speaking and debate, research, analysis, writing, collaboration, and problem-solving. Students gain confidence and can grow their empathy as they consider multiple perspectives and the complexity of the real world and its many needs. These skills and dispositions are central to AST’s mission to develop global citizens.
