Is the American School in Taichung accredited?
We are fully accredited by WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges).
How many students are in each class?
- Elementary School (Grades 1–5): Typically 12–16 students per classroom.
- Secondary School (Grades 6–12): Typically 15–18 students per classroom.
- AP and CFL (Chinese as a Foreign Language) classes: Usually have smaller class sizes.
Are your teachers credentialed?
All of our teachers are fully credentialed and highly qualified.
What are your school hours?
Classes begin at 8:00 a.m. and end at 3:30 p.m. schoolwide (Grades 1-12). After-school activities are available for students in Grades 2-12, and they typically run from 3:45 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Students who stay after school can choose to take the late bus home.
Can students enroll during the school year?
Yes, if space is available. We use a rolling admissions process and consider applications throughout the school year. Please feel free to contact us to schedule a campus tour and check grade availability.
Does the school have a religious affiliation?
We embrace diversity but do not have any religious affiliation. While we do not provide religious instruction, we appreciate and celebrate the richness of various religions and cultures within our community.
Will my child learn Chinese while following the American curriculum?
Yes, Chinese is a required course for students in Grades 1–8. Our Chinese curriculum offers two pathways: Chinese Native Speakers (CNS) for fluent speakers and Chinese as a Foreign Language (CFL) for non-native learners.
Do you offer a boarding facility?
No, we do not have a dormitory.
Do you have uniforms for the students?
No, but students are asked to dress appropriately and on days when they have PE should wear the PE uniform. A dress code is stated in the handbook.
Is school lunch available for purchase?
AST offers an optional school lunch program. Please see our

Do you provide school bus service?
American School in Taichung provides its students transportation to and from school via our 5 well-maintained buses. Our bus program serves most of the expatriate residential areas of Taichung, and the service includes a trip to school in the morning and two trips after school: one when the school day ends, leaving at 3:45pm and another once the after-school activities end, leaving by 5:10pm. What are the requirements to attend the American School in Taichung?
According to the Taiwan (ROC) government, applicants must possess a valid foreign passport to be eligible for admission in AST. Click our
Policies and Procedures page for further restrictions.
My child is a permanent resident in the U.S. and has a green card. He does not have a U.S. passport. Can he apply?
No, he can not because he does not hold a foreign passport.
Are there opportunities for parents to volunteer or serve?
We always encourage parents to be involved in the school activities. There are many special events organized by the Parent Association which is an amazing opportunity for parents to volunteer.
