TAIVEX 2025 — A Look Behind the Scenes

Written by Nero Ho & Sophia Yu ('29)

The Write for Delight team—Nero and Sophia—had the honor of interviewing the TAIVEX organizing team–Hannah Liao ('26), Ian Chen ('27), Katie Wang ('27), and Richards Petrevics ('26) as well as the competition champions, Samuel Cheng ('28) and Zacky Tzu ('28).

TAIVEX 2025, held on October 25–26, is a two-day VEX robotics tournament that AST has proudly hosted annually since 2019, attracting teams from across Taiwan with a wide range of ages and experience levels. This year's leadership team included Hannah as General Manager, Katie as Event and Volunteer Coordinator, Ian as Head of Tech, Richards as Scout and Volunteer, and Ms. Tina, who served as the Head Referee. TAIVEX is well-known for its smooth organization, enthusiastic team culture, and creative themes—this year featuring a lively Halloween design that many participants loved.

The planning process behind such a large event is extensive. It begins with choosing a date that avoids overlapping with other major VEX competitions in Taiwan. The team then reviews the annual VEX game challenge, confirms the event theme, opens team registration, and organizes logistics. One recurring challenge is volunteer management, as last-minute cancellations are common and can disrupt the entire event structure. Professionalism becomes essential: judges must fully understand the rules and infraction guidelines, volunteers must follow directions carefully, and organizers must keep the schedule running on time while maintaining a fun, competitive atmosphere.

On the event days, everything generally ran smoothly, though there were a few bumps along the way. Time management was one of the biggest challenges. Judges must finalize award decisions before certificates can be printed, which can take unpredictable amounts of time. Technical issues also emerged throughout the day, requiring Ian to troubleshoot repeatedly—he joked that there were enough tech issues to “fill a whole page.” Managing volunteers and ensuring teams reported on time added another layer of difficulty, as even small delays can trigger a domino effect on the entire tournament’s schedule.

From the competitors' perspective, this year's champions, Zacky Tzu and Samuel Cheng, described the event as exceptionally well run. They praised the organizers for being attentive, prepared, and helpful throughout the competition. They also highlighted Ian Chen's crucial role in maintaining the software and technology that kept the tournament running. As for their own success, the two attributed their victory to strong team chemistry, strategic planning, and countless hours of practice leading up to TAIVEX.

TAIVEX has grown into far more than just a robotics competition. It has become a meaningful community event that strengthens communication skills, builds friendships, and creates lasting memories for everyone involved. This year's tournament was a tremendous success, and the AST community is incredibly proud of the students who organized it. We look forward to seeing TAIVEX continue to grow—both through future event planning and through our teams' participation in upcoming VEX tournaments.

To all future competitors: watch out—the Eagles are coming for you!

'Write for Delight 團隊——Nero 和 Sophia——有幸訪問了 TAIVEX 的籌備團隊(Hannah Liao('26)、Ian Chen('27)、Katie Wang('27)、Richard Petrevics('26))以及本屆冠軍隊伍的成員 Samuel Cheng('28)與 Zacky Tzu('28)。
