Building Thinking Classrooms
This year at AST, we’re embracing Building Thinking C...more
Written by Curtis Shih ('27) & Nero Ho ('29)
Mr. Razzari is a social studies teacher at AST. He originally planned to pursue a career in TV production, but after watching his brother join the history department, he became intrigued and pivoted his major to history, eventually aiming to become a professor. Ultimately, he chose to teach history internationally, as opportunities for a professorship were limited.
His love of history—a mix of inspiration from movies he watched as a child and his brother—guided his decision to teach social studies. One of his favorite historical topics is Western Expansion, especially the Battle of the Alamo. Mr. Razzari’s teaching career has taken him across the world, from Seoul to America, China, Taiwan (PAS), Jeju, and Taiwan again (KAS and now AST). He was drawn to AST because he wanted to try something new, as well as experience the small-school environment that AST offers.
He states that one of the hardest challenges as a teacher is maintaining student interest while managing his own expectations. Perseverance is central to his teaching philosophy, something he learned through his outdoor hobbies such as hiking, cycling, weight training, and other sports. He emphasizes that students are like athletes: they improve through consistent practice. This philosophy also informs his grading system, which is designed to give students opportunities to practice and improve rather than serve as a rigid measure of ability. Outside of school, Mr. Razzari also has a unique interest in snakes.
When it comes to life advice, Mr. Razzari hopes students won't take things too seriously. Networking and maintaining relationships is key; he notes that even small, brief conversations can open doors. He maintains good relationships with his former students, with some returning years later for advice or recommendation letters. At his previous school in Jeju, he also led the girls' soccer team, fostering fun and amiable relationships with his players and creating stories he still laughs about today. In addition to coaching, he was involved in Model United Nations at his previous schools, which allowed him to grow both personally and professionally.
Looking ahead, Mr. Razzari hopes to open a small business—perhaps a restaurant specializing in smoked meat—allowing him to be his own boss. We’re excited to welcome Mr. Razzari into the AST community and look forward to his contributions to our social studies department!
