TAIMUN: A Look Behind the Scenes
With the application for DSG of Taimun XXIV now open, the Write for Delight team had the opportunity to interview the 2025 Deputy Secretary General (DSG) of Taimun and the future Secretary General (SG), Curtis Shih (‘27).
Throughout the Taimun conference, Curtis was frequently seen alongside other secretaries, moving around the campus to address issues as they arose. However, much of the effort that contributes to a successful conference happens behind the scenes, requiring careful planning and coordination. This year, it was the first time that Curtis was a secretariat member for Taimun, and as the youngest member of the secretariat team, he had many moments where he doubted himself and often felt that he wasn’t competent enough. As a result, he often felt the need to put in extra time and effort to prove himself, which led to him feeling more like a full-time Taimun officer and a part-time student. His willingness to dedicate so much time to the event was to ensure the success of the conference. As DSGs, they had to plan for everything, such as establishing a date, organizing all of the teams, finding a DSG for each team, and assigning different jobs and assignments to each team. Beyond figuring out the dates and teams, a major part of their job involved managing the logistics of the conference, including booking the hotels and ordering lunches.
During the conference, lunch became a significant issue with negative feedback from visiting students, prompting Curtis to plan improvements for next year. The conference also encountered unexpected situations such as a major Wi-Fi and firewall crash, a crucial element for MUN as all documents are online. The delegates had to rely on personal hotspots while the SG effectively communicated with the tech team to resolve it. Additionally, the delegates' buses were late on the first day, disrupting schedules, but the secretariat team collaborated effectively with the administrators to address the problems one by one. The secretariats worked closely with the AST administrators, particularly Ms. Moye, the Model United Nations coordinator, who provided helpful suggestions and acted as a vital link between the administration and the SGs, offering consistent support.
As Taimun XXIII concluded, the secretariat for the following year had to begin planning for the upcoming conference. Their initial planning included setting the dates and working on the chair reports. In collaboration with the administrators, the secretariat is also starting to interview potential heads for the Taimun teams for the next year. If you would like to contribute to making Taimun XXIV even better, apply for the available positions! We are excited to see the new changes aimed at improving Taimun.
