Nexus~A Club For Everyone

By Nero Ho('29), Mimi Chen & Curtis Shih ('27)

Write for Delight was honored to interview Jeffrey Chang '27, the founder of Nexus Club, about his newly established club, which aims to support and provide underprivileged children with the opportunity to learn English and volleyball.

Jeffrey's motivation for creating this club was based on an experience he had during his 8th-grade summer vacation. He had the privilege of visiting a public school in Chiayi, where he taught the kids basketball and English. After participating in that event, he realized that he wanted to expand this concept of teaching young children sports—not just basketball, but other sports as well. He ultimately chose to teach volleyball because of his high level of interest and confidence in his abilities. He then gathered a few friends who shared the same interest and established Nexus Club.

After establishing the club, Jeffrey began looking for schools where his club could volunteer. He targeted the city of Changhua because it was closer to Taichung, which made transportation arrangements easier and less of a hassle. He sent multiple emails and messages to different schools around Changhua and ultimately connected with Lian Xing Elementary School, as they showed the most support and enthusiasm for his project. Once the school was confirmed, complicated logistical details arose, as it was the first time Jeffrey and his club members were organizing such a large-scale event. They had to start everything from scratch and faced challenges, such as scheduling and planning teaching materials.

Despite the challenges involved in planning, Jeffrey worked effectively and passionately with his club members. In the first week of July during summer break, he visited Lian Xing Elementary School and held Nexus’ first volleyball camp. The camp spanned two full days, and although it was tiring and very demanding, Jeffrey and his club members gained a lot of experience and received positive feedback from the students they taught as well as from Lian Xing’s principal. This gave them a sense of accomplishment and made them feel that their hard work had paid off. After their first event, Jeffrey and his members realized that they wanted to make a substantial impact on these children’s lives, so they began setting goals.

A few of the goals they have set include helping to improve the infrastructure of Lian Xing's campus, as much of their classroom equipment, such as projectors, chairs, and desks, is very old. In addition to improving the classroom environment, Jeffrey would also like to revamp their volleyball and basketball courts. He recognizes that during Taiwan's scorching summers, having a shed or awning above those courts would enhance the students' sporting experiences.

Although having ambitious goals is great, they also come with many challenges. A major issue is finding a foundation to fund their project. Jeffrey's goals require a significant amount of funds, and without the help of a foundation, it would be difficult to achieve them. Despite this challenge, Jeffrey and his club members are prepared to seek out and reach out to foundations willing to sponsor them in their mission to foster a learning environment for underprivileged children in Taiwan.
